Yesterday

I took yesterday to myself, as much as I could considering NG was working and Sweet'ums was home. We had a mostly quiet day except for the handful of tantrums she threw (what happened to my sweet and placid little baby?) and the phone ringing constantly.

Nice Guy was going to surprise me by coming home early (that got spoiled by someone else who lied so he could go to a football game) but instead, he came home at his normal time, bringing surprises. I have a card with a note at the bottom, "The best thing that ever happened to me happened 23 years ago, and I didn't even know it!" and a pretty little cake. He was going to put 23 candles on my little cake except we were worried, to borrow a quote from the Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, that it would look like the burning of Atlanta. Even with just twelve candles, it looked like a disaster waiting to happen.

If anyone ever visits the Deep South, you must immediately go to the nearest Publix Supermarket and buy yourself one of the little cakes. They have the best cakes ever, and definitely the best buttercream icing.

I had to trim Sweet'ums' bangs a week or so ago and while I'm not 100% satisfied with the results, it does its job and keeps her hair out of her face. It also left the back hair long enough for a ponytail, which makes her look like one of those 1950s poodle skirt girls. Which then reminded me, someone gave us a dress at one of our baby showers that was basically a poodle skirt dress, and I had a little white sweater that would go perfectly with it. And she's never worn the dress--for the longest time it was way too big, and then, quite suddenly, she'd outgrown it (mostly in the shoulders). So I figured, before she completely outgrew it, I'd get a couple pictures of her in her pretty dress.

I love that grin! It just makes my day!

We heard from the doctor finally about my blood work. It came back negative, but I'm not sure whether that means anything to him or not considering about 20% of RA patients will test negative at any given time, especially those with mild or undeveloped cases. So I'm going to keep taking my meds for a little while and then schedule myself a follow-up just to see where we go from here.

So that's all you'll get from me today. My hands are aching so I'd probably better get off of here.

AWOL

I'm sorry I've been AWOL lately. I'm still waiting to hear from the doctor, and I'm trying to plan Sweet'ums' second birthday party, and I'm trying to do it all with hands that are aching like there's no tomorrow. Funny how I didn't start hurting nearly as bad until AFTER the doctor's appointment. But I'm functioning in something of a fog, considering my hands hurt and I'm in a perpetual state of I-haven't-slept-in-three-days because of the meds making me sleepy. I just haven't spent much time on the computer.

I hope everyone is ok. Folks, feel free to email me. I'm around, just not always active.

Trying to keep growing

Around the new year, I borrowed an idea from someone whose blog I read regularly, who borrowed the idea from someone else, about how to approach the New Year. Instead of a resolution, this person proposed that blog writers should adopt a word or idea for the new year, and try to incorporate the idea into their everyday life. I chose "growth".

Since then, a lot has changed. At the time I wrote the initial blog, we were still anticipating having more children and didn't really see too many reasons not to. Nice Guy was on day shift, and though money was tight our unexpected bills hadn't popped up yet and we were mostly snug-but-comfy in our finances, having finally learned to live with what we had. Our hope for the new year was that we'd have a quiet one, something that would follow something along the lines of what most folks consider "normal".

Now, we know I have PCOS, that I'm insulin resistant, and it looks like I have rheumatoid arthritis. I'm ready to work, but the economy locally is crap, to put it bluntly, and I'm not well-suited for most of the jobs that are available (not that that's going to stop me, because I still plan to apply as soon as I have our second car running again). We've been pre-approved for a mortgage but we're afraid to take the leap until we're a little more settled financially. We're facing some big decisions in the next few months that I don't even begin to know how to approach, and it's all really quite overwhelming sometimes.

To be honest, I'm not sure how well I've stuck to my New Year theme. I've done some wallowing, which is pretty much the opposite of what I was striving for this year. I still cling to Sweet'ums' long-gone babyhood, though she makes it impossible to not also embrace and adore the big girl she's becoming. I'm petty, and I still have issues keeping my mouth shut when I know I shouldn't open it, and I still forget to consider how things will come out before I just blurt them. I still get bogged down in how things are, instead of keeping my chin up and looking for ways to improve things. I'm still trying to accept all of the health stuff, and trying to figure out how to piece it all together and improve my health and weight and wellbeing in a way that won't do me more harm than good. I still get lonely and sad, and I tend to eat when I'm lonely and sad, and that completely defeats the purpose of trying to lose weight. I'm spinning my wheels on so many things.

I've done some growing, even if not as much as I'd hoped to by now. In its own way the health stuff has forced me to take a much more serious look at my life and what condition I want myself to be in, and though I'm still trying to get a grip on my lifestyle it's definitely matured my outlook on health in general. I'm not staying depressed like I was, and that was one of my goals for the year. Actually, since all the health stuff has happened, I've stayed in much better spirits, although I can't think of a good reason why. I'm learning to appreciate my husband and daughter more, to nag them less, and to value them each for all of the little quirks and special things that make them who they are. Lately I've begun to realize just how incredibly blessed I am to have Nice Guy as my husband, because he has gone out of his way to help me and lift me up and bear my burdens with me, and I can't even express at this moment how thankful I am for him. I've always loved and valued him, but I think that's one area I've grown a lot in--I'm learning to appreciate him in ways I never thought possible.

I know this post has been a little bit of a rambling one, but it's been on my mind for a few days now, with my birthday coming up and me evaluating a lot about how much my life has changed, changing me with it, in the last two or three years. The year's not over yet, so I'm not discouraged, but I'll definitely admit, I haven't made the progress I'd hoped for.

Oh, and thanks, Christina, for posting the idea at New Year's. It certainly has been better than a resolution and it's been on my mind more, and even though I haven't come as far as I'd hoped, I've done better than I would have with a resolution!

RA

So it would seem that I have rheumatoid arthritis. According to my grandmother about 90% of her family has it, so it's very prevalent in my family. And the doc wrote down my symptoms, felt of my hands, and pretty much confirmed it. We're just waiting on the blood work to make it official, but we know for sure I have some form of arthritis.

My rash seems to just be eczema, and he gave me a cream for it. I have a pill for the arthritis so hopefully that'll help too.

So now we know... And knowing's half the battle!

Houses

We went to look at the house today. Well, it's a mobile home, but anyway, it's a great place. We're trying to decide whether or not to make an offer... Well, there's still more time for that.

There's another house almost across the street from that one. It's 1848 square feet, so it's HUGE. The master bedroom is probably twice the size of mine and I know the master bath could fit both of my bathrooms inside it. They're asking $100k but it's totally not worth that--a coat of paint and new carpet just doesn't equal a hundred-thousand-dollar house, considering the guy bought it for under $50k. We're considering putting a low offer on it just to see if he'd take it.

So that's what's going on right now. We might look at a couple other places but I'm not sure. Later, if I have time, I might put a few pictures up.

More excitement!

Friday we meet with our real estate agent and, assuming we have enough time, we go see the first house on our list. Maybe we'll go see others... I'm not sure, mostly because I'm not really sure how this works. I'm SO EXCITED! I'm almost dizzy--if we really like this place and they like our offer, we could possibly be in a new home by Thanksgiving or Christmas... If we don't like it, we're still moving in the right direction! It's just really exciting, overall.

I'm in a constant state of internal "happy dance". It's such a weird feeling for me--I try so hard most of the time not to get excited over things because they rarely work out. But this has my head spinning--even if this house doesn't pan out, there's others out there and eventually we'll find something perfect for us. So there's really no reason not to be excited. For once, barring something catastrophic happening, I actually have something to deeply look forward to.

The last time I was this excited about something was when I was pregnant with Sweet'ums. That was probably the last time anything life-changing in a positive way happened to us. Hopefully, this will be positive, and hopefully it'll work out.

I'm gonna go now... but I just wanted to share.
